Chloe, you write a lot of great posts and I love your “voice” in all of them, but this one may be the best yet. It’s tragic, but so true. I have also ached to see the room I loved became a stinking golden calf. But we do no favors to anyone by pretending it’s not that.

thank you for both your honesty and tremendous discernment. I was there from 02 to 05. Even back then I saw inklings of the Golden Calf syndrome. we need to protect at all costs which was the wrong approach.

Chloe, you’ve got your hand deep in the wound of Christ and you are touching His Sacred Heart. It permeates this whole piece.

Our prayers, and prayer rooms, are nothing but noise and clanging cymbals if we have not love.

In “Life Together” Bonhoeffer speaks to this idolatrous commitment we have to “vision”, “dream” and “mission” over the true love we are called to have with our neighbor. His words ring profoundly true in light of this whole ordeal:

“God hates visionary dreaming; it makes the dreamer proud and pretentious. The man who fashions a visionary ideal of community demands that it be realized by God, by others, and by himself. He enters the community of Christians with his demands, sets up his own laws, and judges that brethren and God Himself accordingly. He stands adamant, a living reproach to all others in the circle of brethren. He acts as if he is the creator of the Christian community, as if his dream binds men together. When things do not go his way, he calls the effort a failure. When his ideal picture is destroyed, he sees the community going to smash. So he becomes, first an accuser of his brethren, then an accuser of God, and finally the despairing accuser of himself”
